Tribute to Sonja Gaudet, world’s best wheelchair curler

Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster praises constituent Sonja Gaudet, the world’s most-decorated wheelchair curler. She was honoured this week by the Canadian Paralympic Committee to be Canada’s flag bearer for the opening ceremonies March 7  at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

“I just wish all our Paralympians from Canada the very best of luck, and a special thank-you to my friend Sonja. She’s well deserved as the flag bearer for Canada,” the MLA told the Legislature March 5 during the time set aside in proceedings for member’s statements.

Sonja Gaudet was on Canada’s women’s wheelchair curling team won gold at the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games and at the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. Her long list of achievements also includes gold medals from the 2009, 2011 and 2013 World Wheelchair Curling Championships. She is a native of Vernon.

“Sonja Gaudet is a good friend, ” Eric Foster said. “As a matter of fact, the first time I was on a stage after being elected I shared the stage with Sonja.”
